Digital Photography Fundamentals

by Abi Bruntlett

Taking Mandy’s course was a pleasure from start to finish. I knew very little about photography when I signed up and after completing the class, I felt like I had a comfortable understanding of how to get a nice exposure, compose a nice photo, and how to figure out where to place my subject in order to use the natural light. I found the slides useful and informative and I downloaded them so that I can reference them from to time. I also really liked the personal time Mandy spent giving me feedback on my photos! She made me feel like photography is something I can do and was encouraging while offering critique!

Mandy is very experienced and knowledgeable in breaking down the fundamentals of digital photography for the beginner. For years I have tried learning how to use my DSLR camera on my own, from friends and from online resources without success. Mandy's thorough curriculum addresses how to use the camera settings, photography fundamentals, composition, lighting and portraiture in a very accessible way. Each learning module reveals the technical aspects in a step by step easy to learn lesson, followed by simple assignments that motivated me to get out and apply my learning. I loved the sessions where students received technical and artistic feedback on their images. We could see our learning evolve through our improved photos as well as problem solve challenges. After creating blurry and poorly lit photographs before this class, I now feel confident in using my camera settings to achieve beautiful results and have the tools I need to take on more advanced photography techniques.

I had a great time in the photography class, and it has taken me from complete beginner to having enough skill to offer photography as a service. Mandy offers multiple teaching styles, from slide presentations and online resources to hands-on direction of photo editing. This helps to form a comprehensive understanding of camera technology, techniques, composition, and editing. The course assignments were varied in such a way that I was able to explore different subjects that I may not otherwise had thought to try, and really helped me to find my own style and interests. I’m looking forward to taking the next level of the course!

Mandy Keathley's digital photo course gave me a great first step into the world of digital photography. I learned more about the practical applications of photography and editing in her class than I did in four previous photography classes. She also does a great job of making the assignments fun and challenging, and gives proper, thorough feedback on your work every week. Her enthusiasm for photography is infectious.
